Barco at Fatboy Slim’s Beach Bootique: larger-than-life screens for larger-than-life beats

A few weeks ago, concert revellers from all over the U.K. assembled at the brand-new Amex Stadium in Brighton for a unique mix of superlative big beat dance music – Fatboy Slim’s 5th Big Beach Bootique. No less than 200 square metres of Barco’s MiTrix LED display gave the event its necessary visual punch.

 

Big beat artist Fatboy Slim aka Norman Cook, the man behind hit singles like ‘Praise you’, ‘Rockafeller Skank’ and ‘Right Here, Right Now’, is no adherent of false modesty. His infamous Beach Bootique show testifies to his lofty ambitions.

To provide the mesmerizing video projections to fit the occasion, long-time Barco partner XL Video supplied 200 square meters of Barco’s MiTrix LED screens, cameras, a Catalyst playback system and crew. The MiTrix was the centerpiece of the stage at Brighton’s Amex Stadium, positioned immediately behind Cook’s DJ mixer.

For the event, Cook himself and his creative director Tim Fleming had created special playback video content, which was stored on laptops. Instead of just pushing the play-button and watching things unfurl, both artists could mix the images that were projected ‘on-the-fly’ as the performance unfolded. Consequently, the show – a lively mix of graphics, animations and text - was completely improvised, as Fleming and Fatboy Slim connected audience and music with the vibes of the moment.
