Fraunhofer IAIS, Barco and Citron present the world's first Quad Full HD Multitouch Panel

Three companies combined their skills and expertise to develop the world's first Quad Full HD Multitouch Panel. They are Barco, an international provider of visualization solutions; Citron, a German manufacturer of touch and multitouch systems and the Fraunhofer Institute for Intelligent Analysis and Information Systems IAIS bringing in its expertise in the areas of information visualization and human computer interaction. Designed to aid the analysis of seismic data during oil exploration, the system is the first of its kind in the world and is targeted primarily at decision makers and analysts in the oil and gas industry.

At the heart of the system is a Barco manufactured 56” display with a resolution of 3840x2160 pixels combined with an innovative infra-red-based multitouch overlay by Citron. The Barco display delivers crisp, clear and color-accurate perfect images and the resolution needed by the oil and gas experts. The software, developed by Fraunhofer IAIS, uses seismic data acquired during oil exploration to look at rock formations below the seabed and allows oil and gas experts to work as a team to analyze and interpret potential oil or gas reserves. “Several people can easily work together at a time in front of the 56“ display as the portable VRGeo Multitouch recog-nizes 32 simultaneous touches”, emphasizes Dr. Manfred Bogen, coordinator of the VRGeo Consortium at Fraunhofer IAIS. “In order to guarantee success, the planning of bore holes requires the input and joint effort of a number of different specialists, each with their own area of expertise.”

The multitouch panel was developed especially for the VRGeo Con-sortium, a group made up of representatives from different inter-national oil and gas companies. “Initially, we will be using the panel to analyze seismic data emanating from the oil and gas industries. However, we already see it in a variety of other application do-mains such as medicine, the military and the real estate business”, states Bogen. The development team at Fraunhofer IAIS first pre-sented their new multitouch panel at the VRGeo Consortium's an-nual meeting on December 14, 2010 in Sankt Augustin, Germany, and a number of VRGeo member companies are already planning to use the system within their organizations.
