Frame rate frenzy

프로젝터 1분 읽기

As 4K resolution, 3D sound and laser projection are on the rise, the cinema world is rapidly changing. In parallel with these evolutions, there’s also another clear trend: the push towards higher frame rates. We’ve listed 5 things you should know about this techno trend.

1. Frame rates explained

Frame rates are the number of images displayed by a projector in a single second. In today’s cinema world, feature films are being shot and played back at 24 fps. This means that every 1/24th of a second, a new image is projected onto the screen.

2. Speeding up

‘Higher frame rates’ usually refer to speeds of 48 fps or even 60 fps. Based on current camera and post-production technology, these higher frame rate speeds are expected to be sufficient for digital cinema projection for the coming years.

3. Improved image quality

Recording and playing movies at twice (or more) the rate of today’s standard will improve overall image quality, particularly on fast-moving scenes and camera pans, by reducing motion blur artifacts. And the effect will even be more apparent on 3D features. However, the transition to higher frame rates impacts the entire industry workflow, from production, post-production and packaging, to distribution and exhibition. The industry - including DCI standards and SMPTE standards - needs to evolve into using these higher frame rates.
